Pussy Riot:Riot Days

Find an artist

Since 2017, Pussy Riot, the celebrated Russian feminist protest collective, has performed “Riot Days” — a groundbreaking fusion of live music, theatre, and multimedia. The show is based on Maria “Masha” Alyokhina’s acclaimed book, Riot Days, chronicling the collective’s iconic protests, court trials, and prison sentences.

“Riot Days” evolves continuously, incorporating real-time reflections on political persecutions and current events like Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

This show has been performed over 400 times globally — in almost all European countries, as well as in North and South America, Australia, and New Zealand.

More than 150 performances of the last version have taken place since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The “Riot Days” show and Pussy Riot exhibitions have raised over €200,000 to support the Ukrainian Children’s Hospital “Okhmatdyt” in Kyiv, and have also supported political prisoners in Russia. “Riot Days” has earned numerous awards, including:

• City of Dachau Prize for Civil Courage, Germany (2024)
• Herald Angel Award at the Edinburgh Festivals, Scotland (2018)
• Total Theatre Award at the Edinburgh Festivals, Scotland (2018)
• Woody Guthrie Prize, USA (2023)

Additionally, Riot Days’ members were awarded honorary Doctor of Letters degrees by the University of
Kent, celebrating their achievements with a spontaneous performance at Canterbury Cathedral.

A Radically New Vision for 2025

Maria Alyokhina and Alexander Cheparukhin are crafting a bold new version of “Riot Days.” This iteration delves into Maria’s personal journey post-liberation from Russian prison in 2022:
• Pussy Riot’s protests, including their clash with Cossacks during the 2014 Sochi Olympics
• Attacks by pro-Kremlin groups
• The heroic story of Alexey Navalny, his arrest, imprisonment, and murder in prison
• Maria’s multiple arrests
• Putin’s invasion of Ukraine

Powerful and exhilarating…”
Masha Alyokhinas collaboration with music producer Alexander Cheparukhin and director Yury Muravitsky was full of fierce, rousing joy, free of scripted cues.

Poetic, razor-sharp, and disarmingly witty…”
I left blazing with hope. Riot Days convinced me that gigs still have the power to move the masses.
