Romperayo

Romperayo sounds like a fast moving musical journey through Colombian tropical folklore, a mischievous and modern interpretation of the psychedelic sounds of  70s cumbia and other tropical rhythms. Expect musical fireworks that don’t only move your hips and feet, but also direct your brain into a blissful mood.

They are an amazing live band, no doubt. And nicely weird. For example, barks, shrieks, and stoner samples floated on a moog-induced bubble and punctuated the superb playing, keeping things suitably trickster. [..] Of course you could just dance, which most people did, in that strange, jerky, overly-happy way that the Dutch have when letting themselves go. Resembling nothing so much as some Breughelian scene of debauch, the audience began to gently steam and display their oneness with their newly-found Latin soul.” (Richard Foster, Louder Than War)

Romperayo is part of the new Colombian music scene that re-interprets their roots in a fascinating way, combining both traditional rhythms and modern electronics. It’s bordering on utter weirdness, but at the same time very danceable and full of musical humor too.

Other bands from this scene are a.o. Meridian Brothers, Frente Cumbiero and Los Pirañas. Pedro Ojeda, drummer of Romperayo, happens to be the drummer from Los Pirañas too.

In September 2024 they released their latest album Insurgentes Carismaticos, another dive into a psychedelic tropical universe, with a strong influence of the sound of the Latin American and African vinyls from the 60s and 70s. And for summer 2025 another record will already be released again!

The group successfully played festivals like Roskilde (Denmark), Fusion (Germany), Best Kept Secret and Le Guess Who? (Netherlands), Clandestino (Sweden), Keroxen (Tenerife, Spain) and Tremor (Azores, Portugal), to name a few.
