One of the most famous artists of Persian classical music is Kayhan Kalhor. As a five-time Grammy nominee he is not only a virtuoso on the kamancheh, a kind of spiked fiddle, he is also known for his exciting improvisations, enchanting compositions and inspiring collaborations.
He wrote compositions for Iran’s most renowned vocalists like Mohammad Reza Shajarian and Shahram Nazeri, was co-founder of the famous Dastan Ensemble and Masters of Persian Music, and performed and recorded with Iran’s greatest instrumentalists like Hossein Alizadeh and Ali Akbar Moradi.
But he never restricted himself to Persian music only. His relentless search for new forms of collaboration brought him together with, among others, Malian kora master Toumani Diabate, Dutch jazz ensemble Rembrandt Trio, the American Kronos Quartet and Turkish saz maestro Erdal Erzincan.
With his ensemble he builds on hundreds of years of Persian musical tradition, showcasing this rich influence through the playing of virtuoso artists. Alongside Kalhor the upcoming Persian vocalist Hadi Hosseini is part of the band, just like Niloufar Mohseni on tombak (percussion). The setar player still has to be determined.
